Inside: Bisbee's Black & Blue 2024

Birth of a tradition

In the year 1981, a tradition was founded by Bob Bisbee, a Black and Blue Marlin fishing race with only 6 contestants and $10,000 US on the finish line! Now, the Black & Blue Bisbee’s Tournament signs more than 150 teams each year and millions in prizes.

It was the year 2000 when Bob added an East Cape out-of-season name competition exactly located on Buenavista (between San José del Cabo and La Paz), as a breath from Los Cabos popular bubble. Later in 2002, Bisbee started “Little Bisbee’s” or Los Cabos Offshore Tournament, as a warm-up contest a week before “Black and Blue Bisbee’s”, where a bunch of different sea species are captured, such as Striped Marlin, Blue Marlin, Sailfish, Black Marlin, Yellowfin Tuna, Dolphins, and Spearfish. 

The biggest records by this competition are in 1994, when Rocky Gentile captured a 450 kilos Blue Marlin (aproximmately, 992 pounds!), and in 2006, with Martha Mcnab’s 292 kilos Black Marlin capture (644 lbs).

 

Bisbee's Black & Blue 44th Tournament (2024)

On the 2024 edition, a local crew received the 1st place award on the 44th edition of Bisbee’s Black and Blue fishing tournament. It was on October 25th, 2024 when the 3-day tournament was about to finish weighting Marlins by 9:00 PM. The time was exactly 7:57:13 PM when Carlos “Sharluko” Peralta Ceseña, a young local fisherman, made history when he arrived with his fearless “Crudo” local fisherman crew, bringing along the biggest captured Marlin of the whole contest and almost breaking Bisbee’s history, a breathtaking 634 lbs Black Marlin:

Inside reports

• Everyday the race started at 7:00 AM and finished at 9:00 PM, where exactly 174 teams were confirmed in this year’s tournament! All racing to win a percentage of the exciting 7,000,000 USD in prizes. 

• The team who won the most amount of money was “Hooray”, an amazing crew that scored 5th place in the whole competition, and received $1,559,500 USD in prizes!

In addition, the boat “Prime Time” was placed 4th on the competition won $1,148,400 USD, “Super Neighbors” scored the 2nd place and prized with $511,150 USD, and finally, the crew “PLC Hookers” on 3rd place were awarded by $460,500 USD.

Conclusion

The 44th Bisbee’s Black & Blue fishing tournament in 2024 saw local team “Crudos”, led by Carlos “Sharluko” Peralta Ceseña, secure first place with a 634-pound Black Marlin, nearly breaking a tournament record. Over three days, 174 teams competed for a share of $7 million, showcasing the event’s growth since its start in 1981.

Team “Hooray” earned the top prize money at $1.56 million, though they finished fifth, with other notable winners including “Prime Time” and “Super Neighbors.” This year’s tournament celebrated both local talent and Bisbee’s enduring legacy in Los Cabos.
